The 1st conference with the topic “Cultivation and utilization of trees on agricultural areas”

The first joint conference national conference with the topic “Cultivation and utilization of trees on agricultural areas” of the cooperative projects agroforst, DENDROM and AGROWOOD was held on November 6th and November 7th 2006 in Tharandt. Representatives from economy and science farmers, foresters and students from all federal states as well as the Swiss and Austria participated in the conference.
Topics were economical potentials, site and species selection, state-of-the-art techniques, and landscape aesthetics in addition to ecological and economical aspects of agricultural timber production (Cultivation from trees on agricultural areas). Moreover, agroforestry systems and their advantages and disadvantages were presented. The two days were too short to answer all questions about this complex area. There was not enough time to discuss the law aspects of energy plant cultivation and international aspects. This became obvious by the discussion contributions.
Prof. Dr. Murach thanked the BMBF in his résumé for the financial support of the cooperative projects, as well as the project AGROWOOD for the excellent organization of the conference: “Germany has to make up a lot in comparison to our European neighbors because not much work has been done particular in plant breeding as well as cultivation and harvesting methods within the last 15-20 years. Essential for an adequate consulting of the farmers are site specific growth parameters and harvesting volumes of appropriate species. This can only be done by the financial support of the federal and state government.” The conference did end with an excursion to experimental site Methau 1 & 2 of The Forestry Department of the University Dresden and an agricultural timber site established in 2004 by the agricultural business Kloas in Southern Brandenburg. The next joint conference with the topic “Cultivation and utilization of trees on agricultural areas” will be held from July 2nd to July 4th in Freiburg in Breisgau
