Implementation
The regional emphasis is on Baden-Württemberg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, two regions which differ substantially in their ecological, forestry, and agricultural basic conditions. These differences increase the complexity of the project and also offer the opportunity to research questions concerning agroforestry systems more in depth.

The focus in Baden-Württemberg was made on following communes:

Simonswald, Black Forest: low productivity sites in slopes, high forest proportion effects landscape, with continuing afforestation particular in steep slopes.

Kirchhardt, Kraichgau: intensive agricultural systems, agro-forestry systems can possibly contribute to reduction of erosion, to connect biotopes, and to enhance low-structured landscape.

Hechingen-Boll, Swabian Alp foreland: lacking maintenance or abandonment of the high portion of mixed orchards.

Argenbühl, Allgäu: Search for new alternatives particularly for the grasslands in slopes, so far small forest portion, abrupt crossing from Norway spruce afforestations to open land.
